3d acme threads

Does anyone know how to draw 3d acme threads in autocad 2006? I could use a lsp routine or just another method.
This could be threads from 1.25" diam. to 2.5" diameter.

Draw a profile of the treads, copy or array them to the tread count that you
need, Join it to form a closed pline and revolve it around the center of the
bolt.

Jason,
I can't figure that out from your description - can you post an example.

In your instructions the threads would not be joined together.
I need to know how to draw so the threads would be actually joined. This would require a spiral effect as in a bolt where the thread actually spirals upward as one complete thread.
Can you explain how to do this?

I went through this a while ago in architecture trying to draw a curved ramp.

It turns out that autocad won't really do helical forms. Of course that was in 2002, we're on 2006 now and I haven't tried since.

No lofts or helixes in standard acad yet. You'll still have to pay more for
those features or fake it like I did in the attachment earlier. Do you
really need that much detail in a thread? Are you planning on casting it? Or
are you just curious and wanted to try it.

autoguru

Jason, thanks for the lsp file. I tried to open it but it wont open.
I think it must be an older version. I am using autocad 2002.
What do you think?

autoguru

I might use it if i can find it. Either I can draw it or use a lsp
program.
So far I can only do fake 3d acme threads. I would prefer the
real thing.

JDMATHER

If you could post the specs maybe someone will model it for you in a true 3D modeler. (see attached)

Or you can fake it if your work doesn't require anything more than pretty pictures...

Not a lsp file - it is a zipped file. After downloading RMB on the file name and select extract. Or download WinZip to extract. Here is an example of an ACME that should open in v2002.

Of course this is an editable solid unlike the faceted mesh in the Cadalyst article.

It's funny that a program designed to make pretty pictures like 3dsmax will accurately model threads, but a program designed to be accurate wont.

autoguru

What does RMB mean? Can you explain again please?

There are lot of files in this zip file. I don't find any lisp
files in it. I am looking for a lisp file that will do 3d acme threads.

JDMATHER

>There are lot of files in this zip file.
Huh? What are the file names you see?

>I am looking for a lisp file that will do 3d acme threads.
Solid or surface?

autoguru

I need a lisp file that will do solid 3d acme threads.
For some reason this file is a solid drawing of something
that looks like a T-Bolt.

JDMATHER

You didn't post a 2D drawing of what you are trying to do.
I do not know of any lisp that will create a 3D ACME - but you can slice and union these as needed.

The Machinery's Handbook lists 7 sizes between 1.75 and 2.5 inches.

If you follow the 3D topics on the forum you will find that even the OLD-timers have difficulty creating solids in AutoCAD that match real parts.
